On our recent INSET Day, one of the things we did was run some refresher training on an intervention called Social Stories for all our staff. Social Stories are an intervention for children, young people or adults who are having difficulties in some situations due to not understanding, or misunderstanding the social context of what is going on. They help someone to understand a situation better by providing the information they are missing, and can also provide suggestions as to how people might choose to respond or behave in that situation.
We use Social Stories a lot in school to help our students develop their self-care skills, social skills, and learning skills, through providing more information about a topic, and improving their understanding. If there is something at home you think a Social Story could help with, please let your child’s Speech and Language therapist know and they can work with you to write one.
