History

In 1989, Joey Burgess, a Speech and Language Therapist, started a small language centred nursery group in her own home in Wimbledon. With the philosophy that children need ‘language to learn’ and ‘to learn language’ through exposure to a range of experiences that enable them to master other skills and go on to flourish, Joey named the nursery Blossom House.

Joey’s original vision was to provide intensive input during the nursery years to prepare children to enter mainstream school. However, many schools were unable to maintain the level of support the children needed, and it was clear that there was a need for specialist support beyond age five.

In 1993, Blossom House extended its original brief and began to provide full time key stage 1 education for children who required a highly supportive, language-based primary school curriculum. At this point the school moved up the road into a larger property, where they were able to welcome more children who needed the unique environment that Blossom House provides.

Knowing that many students needed the provision to continue into secondary school, and that there were many children struggling in mainstream secondaries, Blossom House developed a key stage 3 and 4 curriculum. When the building next door to Blossom House became available, the school moved into larger, newly refurbished premises, where it expanded into a full secondary school with a sports hall and proper provision for art, design and technology and ICT. In 2012 the school expanded further to offer a Post 16 Provision to students up to age 19.

In April 2015 the school moved again, to new and bigger premises in Motspur Park. Pupils are now benefiting from more space and better facilities, with excellent local sports and outdoor provision. Now with three sites, Blossom House has over 300 pupils aged 3 to 19 and over 300 full and part time staff.
